Pirates D-line Leads the Way

Pirates - 2007 Season

Putnam City is 6-0, and the team's defensive line is one big reason why. The Pirates feature two virtually immovable objects in senior tackles Dominick Gilbert-Phillips (6-2, 280) and Aaron Kelly (6-0, 270).

Kelly has 46 tackles and six sacks. Gilbert-Phillips has 29 tackles and three sacks. But more importantly, PC has given up just 695 yards rushing through seven games and surrenders just eight points per contest.

"They've developed into quite a dynamic duo,” PC coach Mark Little said. "They're very durable and very coachable. You get a couple of lineman like that in the trenches, with the blood, sweat and tears, and it makes your defense very tough to move the ball on.”

Little said PC's defensive line is the cornerstone of the team's success on that side of the ball. It all starts up front.

"Both are so good on their feet,” he said. "They don't do fancy or cute things. They do the right things. Their explosion off the ball and their mass, and their ability to perceive what's happening in front of them are what makes them so good.”
